For all the brides-to-be, congratulations on your engagement!
Five months into marriage and I still haven’t shared our special day. Frugal living is one of the things I am passionate about and I am just glad this journey happened at the start of my married life.
Every girl dreamed of a magical wedding day. It would be hypocrite of me to say that I did not wish it as well. However, I was not one of those lucky girl and my dream remained a dream even when I already woke up.
2020 was a difficult year for everyone. My dream wedding as a young girl wasn’t able to through because of 2020. Still, I consider my self lucky because when others lost their lives I just lost a dream.
As I grew into adulthood, my dream wedding suddenly changed. 2020 vindicated this dream when intimate weddings became the trend. And this time, waking up is just awesome.
In this blog, a rare and personal blog which I will seldom write, I will share the cost of each item that were essential to the wedding. Check out this list:
1. Legal Documents
In any wedding, church or civil, every couple must see to it that all legal document were accurate. Secure these documents timely and consider the amount of time it takes for these documents to be released.
These are some of the basic documents or requirements to a civil wedding and their corresponding fees:
- CENOMAR & Birth Certificates – Php 1,100.00
- Barangay Certificate – Php 150.00
- Certificate of Attendance in Pre-Marital Counseling & Family Planning Seminar – Php 30.00
- Marriage License – Php 90.00
- Judge* – Php 300.00
- Marriage Contract – Php 75.00
Total Payment for Documents: Php 1,745.00
*The judge’s fee have to be paid for you to be included in the raffle. With the raffle, each couple will be given in random the judge’s name and RTC branch. Submit these requirements to the RTC and set a schedule for your civil wedding.
Marriage license is valid only for 120 days. The rest of the documents, ‘technically’ has no validity. However, some agency will only accept recent or documents which are not more than six months from the date of release.
A separate article is written to help and guide couples where to get these documents. Read: 10 Steps In Planning A Civil Wedding in Mandaue, Cebu | Comprehensive Guide, Time Frame, Fees + Tips
2. Wedding Rings
We got our wedding ring from Royal Gem in Metro Ayala, Cebu. We were looking specifically for a simple band, literally no design at all, identical and has a comfort fit.
Wedding rings were usually made in 14K or 18K gold. 18K rings were more brilliant in color but less sturdy. Since we wanted to use our ring everyday, we chose the 14K because we needed the much sturdier material among the two. 14K is also cheaper although less brilliant, a compromise we were happy to make.
We were also keen with the comfort fit feature of the ring since we will be using it for the rest of our lives. Comfort fit ring has a beveled, inside edge which will allow us to slip on and off the ring smoothly and comfortably. Comfort fit ring were expensive compared to standard fit ring. Standard fit ring has a flat, inner surface. Many find it painful and uncomfortable when worn for a long time.
As for the design, I don’t want any, groove, stone or anything embedded on the ring. I already have an engagement ring filled with stones and I must say cleaning it is not my favorite thing in the world.
Some jewelry stores does not allow resizing. Be sure to get the right size, check with both your left and right ring finger and make sure you will be comfortable wearing it.
Wedding Ring Price: Php 9,485.00 for two rings
3. Wedding Dress and Shoes
I bought my wedding dress online from Apartment 8 Clothing. They actually have a physical store in SM Seaside, Cebu but during my visit, the dress I chose for the wedding was out of stock. So I just playfully try anything there to see what size fits me.
If you happen to order your wedding dress online, make sure that the measurement of the dress you find in their website were closest to your body measurements. This is especially true for ready to wear type of clothing.
Also, make sure that your dress will arrive before and not too near the date of the event. Just in case any adjustments needed to be made, you have enough time before the event.
Tip: A readymade list of preferred or ideal clothing size is also helpful for online shopping. It will save you time and money for future adjustments.
Ideal clothing size measurements:
- Shoulders – 14 inches
- Sleeves – 6 inches
- Chest – 32~33 inches
- Waist – 26~27 inches
- Hips – 34 inches
- Length (if dress) – 40 inches
- Length (if skirt) – 22 inches
Wedding Dress Price: Php 3,580.00
Shipping Fee: Php 300.00
For my shoes, I just saw something neutral in color when I pass by So Fab while in SM Seaside, Cebu. I honestly wanted to wear heels but my husband and I are of the same height already. Heels were definitely not gonna happen in this wedding.
Wedding Shoes Price: Php 900.00
4. Groom’s Polo
The only purchase ever made for the groom for this civil wedding was his polo. We got it from Uniqlo at SM Seaside, Cebu.
Luckily he still have his old khaki pants, belt and shoes to match with the polo.
Groom’s Polo Price: Php 1,500.00
5. Wedding Bouquet + Boutonnière
Two days before the wedding, I ordered my wedding bouquet at Flower in a Box – Cebu. I just chose from their existing designs, paid the amount and got the flowers the day before the wedding.
The wedding bouquet already includes boutonnière for the groom.
I aso made a request to the flower shop owner to give me Php 100 worth of additional flowers for the cake.
Wedding Bouquet + Boutonnière Price: Php 2,200.00
Shipping fee is already included in the price and the flower shop owner was kind enough to add more flowers (for the cake) free of charge!
6. Bridal Hair and Makeup
My makeup artist was recommended by one of our neighbors through our village’s private group in Facebook .
I checked out the makeup artist’s Facebook and Instagram account to see his output with his past clients. I was so impressed by his skills and immediately contacted him.
The RTC branch was just a few blocks away from where my fiancé lives and so we did not book any room at the hotel for the wedding preparation. We did our makeup in his house which saves us a lot of money. The makeup artist brought with him a hairstylist and they did my hair and makeup simultaneously. The set-up was some kind of a home service. They also did a little touchup with the groom.
Hair and Makeup Price + Taxi Fare: Php 2,000.00
7. Wedding Cake and Wine
One of our witness sponsored our wedding cake. It is a plane white naked cake with a minimal gold accent. We decorated it with the extra flowers given by the owner of Flower in a Box – Cebu.
The wine was also hers. We had are little cake cutting and wine toasting ceremony during the wedding lunch.
Wedding Cake and Wine Prices: Free
8. Wedding Lunch
After the short ceremony, we had our wedding lunch at Tsay Cheng, Grand Convention Center, Cebu.
Tsay Cheng is a Chinese restaurant with a very fancy dining experience vibe. It has a classy white interior with gold accent. The place is ideal for luxury private dining for small groups.
The food was not really that expensive and our frugal civil wedding looked entirely posh because of the lunch venue. There were curtains that separate us from other tables. Since we got married during the pandemic, there were no other lunch bookings apart from our group. We ordered Chinese food good for six people and enjoyed the privacy for the rest of the meal.
Wedding Lunch Expenses: Php 2,500.00
We stayed at Shangri-La Mactan, Cebu for our wedding night. We choose the cheapest room but luckily we were upgraded to sea view room!
Our civil wedding ceremony and wedding lunch took only half of the day. After the event, we went to Mactan and checked in at the resort by 3:00 pm.
We ordered pizza and mojito for dinner and availed the lunch buffet the following morning.
Honeymoon Expenses: Php 13,500 for one night
10. Miscellaneous Fees
In our case, this was our overall wedding and honeymoon expenses. The only unrecorded expenses not found on this blog is our transportation expenses such as our taxi fare from my fiancé’s house to the RTC branch, wedding preparation stage commute and again our taxi fare going to and fro to our honeymoon venue.
Depending on your style and the number of people in your wedding, we recommend you at least set aside 10% of your wedding budget for the miscellaneous fees.
Total Civil Wedding Expenses
1. Documents: Php 1,745.00
2. Wedding Ring: Php 9,485.00
3. Wedding Dress and Shoes: Php 4,780.00
4. Groom’s Polo: Php 1,500.00
5. Bridal bouquet and Groom’s Boutonnière: Php 2,200.00
6. Bridal Hair and Makeup: Php 2,000.00
7. Wedding Cake and Wine: Php 0.00
8. Wedding Lunch/Wedding Reception: Php 2,500.00
9. Honeymoon: Php 13,500.00
Total Expenses = Php 37,710.00
We originally planned a garden wedding in Bacolod City. However, due to Covid we changed our plans and with the blessing of our parents, we agreed to get married in a civil ceremony first.
With the very difficult time to get married, we care a lot about safety and so we only invited four people to attend the wedding. We wanted to celebrate our union but we also wanted to be sensible with our expenses during Covid times.
We honestly thought that some items in the list above were actually a good deal. Our ring for example, we have researched several stores both physical and online. We found out that for a comfort fit ring, it would usually cost 15,000 pesos for one ring. With Royal Gem, we got both ring for only 9,485 pesos.
However, for my dress, I honestly thought that a 3,880 pesos dress was expensive. I could have been more resourceful but due to time constraint and almost every dress maker was having difficulty with their raw materials, buying RTW is the best option that time.
For the groom’s polo, there actually were cheaper ones. However, the fit was snugly and the texture was not soft. So we still choose the best fit and the comfortable one.
Although we wanted a frugal wedding to the very details, being frugal doesn’t always mean buying cheap. Frugal living means buying consciously but not necessarily cheap. And so our wedding expenses rocketed to 37,710 pesos including the honeymoon. Not bad eh? In Cebu, weddings usually costs an average of 450,00 pesos.
Thinking of having a frugal wedding too? Be resourceful and always know what you want. Research, research, research!
